Peri-operative radiotherapy for the prevention of post-operative fibrosis on rats
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Background: Post-operative fibrosis related pains and functional anomalies can be serious problems for patients. Radiotherapy (RT) could inhibit fibrosis which may occurs post- operation especially following laminectomy. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effect of peri-operative RT on the prevention of post-operative fibrosis and scar formation on rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty three male Wistar albino rats, were divided into three experimental groups. Laminectomy was performed to L3 and L4 lomber vertebral regions of group L and L+R rats. The rats in L+R group in addition to this procedure also received peri-operative RT on the laminectomy area. A total dose of 700 cGy of RT was applied as a single fraction using electrons. Control rats received no treatment. A rotarod test was performed at 20, 30 and 40 rpm/min speed rates to determine the physical performances of the rats. Results: The results have indicated statistically significant (P<0.05) differences for the 30 rpm/min rotarod test between the L and L+R groups. Histopatologically, significant differences were observed in epidural fibrosis, fibroblast cell density and arachnoid adhesion between the L and L+R groups. Conclusion: It was concluded that peri-operative RT may provide a significant advantage for prevention post-laminectomic of scar tissue formation.

Peri-Operative High-Dose v Post-Operative Low Dose Steroid Therapy in the Management of Biliary Atresia: a Preliminary Report
Background: The use of high-dose steroid therapy peri portoenterostomy may have a positive impact on the frequency of cholangitis and survival rate. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on two groups of patients (less than three months of age) suffering from biliary atresia from 1999 to 2005. The patients in group I (G I) were managed peri-operatively by high-dose methylprednisolone while...
متن کاملComparative Perfusion Analysis of Free Muscle-Sparing Versus Pedicle Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous (TRAM) Flaps in Vivo in the Peri-Operative and Late Post-Operative Periods
BACKGROUND Current teaching suggests increased perfusion in free transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flaps over pedicled TRAM flaps, broadening indications for its use in high risk patients. This study compared perfusion analysis of free muscle-sparing versus pedicle TRAM flaps in vivo in the peri-operative and late post-operative periods. METHODS The SPY-Elite system using...

Postoperative radiotherapy led to a marked reduction in the incidence of local recurrence by around 40%. This reduction was reflected on the disease free survival. In a large prospective randomized study, postoperative radiotherapy could reduce local recurrence and improve the disease-free survival [32]. However, postoperative radiotherapy did not affect the incidence of distant metastasis. The...
متن کاملPeri-operative ketamine for acute post-operative pain: a quantitative and qualitative systematic review (Cochrane review).
BACKGROUND Post-operative pain management is usually limited by adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting. Adjuvant treatment with an inexpensive opioid-sparing drug such as ketamine may be of value in giving better analgesia with fewer adverse effects. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of ketamine administered peri-operatively in the t...

Despite decades of research, numerous new product ideas and 'carefully considered opinions' of recognized experts, very few products for the prevention of post-operative adhesions have met the requirements for Level 1 evidence of safety and efficacy. Those that have are useable only at laparotomy. Several new liquid products intended for use at laparoscopy are in various stages of development a...
